SP Carbon Footprint Challenge (Internship)

Like most students in Diploma in Information Technology, when the final year rolled around, I went for my Internship. Fortunately for me, my Design lecturer had plans for me to work on one of SP's Go Green Initiative – The Carbon Footprint Challenge.

The Carbon Footprint Challenge Web Application runs on HTML and CSS, supercharged with PHP, Javascript, and a mySQL database.

The end product is an application that allows all SP staff and student sign in with their credentials to answer questions based on their lifestyle. Based on their input, the amount of greenhouse gases will be calculated.

I had the opportunity to work with staff from the School of Architecture and Built Environment (ABE) and Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA). As I was the only Intern among the full-time staff, I had to independently develop the web application and finish the deliverables before the campaign launched. PHP was not taught in the curriculum, therefore I had to source for my own references. By the end of the Internship, I have picked up many things:

  • Server-Side Scripting (PHP)
  • Robust and Scalable Database Management (mySQL)
  • Developing, Prototyping, and Reworking UI/UX

Overall, I believe I have gotten a great gig thanks to my lecturer who nominated me for the position the moment it opened up. I got a glimpse of working and taking ownership of my development as a programmer.

10/10 would Intern again.
